Overlooking the Champsaur valley, in the French « Hautes-Alpes » , Saint Michel de Chaillol is a village of many facets, being both a Summer and Winter resort.
On the outskirts of the Ecrins National Nature Reserve and a natural frontier between the southern and northern Alps as concerns the climate, Chaillol gets lots of sunshine as well as generous amounts of snow.
Various types of lodgings and a calm protected environment make this place particularly recommendable for run down city dwellers longing to get back to nature.
The pretty mountain village can be seen from the road as you drive up, having already glimpsed the cross country ski slopes further below.
Standing out against an exceptional view, it has the Vieux Chaillol Peak ( 3163m in height), an important part of
the Ecrins mountain range, as a backdrop.
A little higher up is the resort, just above the village, with the main shops (gear rental, restaurants, paper shop, grocer's,...), a starting point for the ski lifts at 1600 m, with a diversified ski area which goes up to 2000 m on
2 mountainsides.
The human dimension has been maintained here by respecting the distances between buildings and the local architectural style.. |
